A zen koan (instructional story):
Nan-in, a Japanese master, received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen.
Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor's cup full, and then kept on pouring.
The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. "It is overfull. No more will go in!"
"Like this cup," Nan-in said, "you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?"
I often get into my worst trades when I am full of opinions and speculations about the news: Oil must drop, gold must go up, and so on.
I often add a "it must do such-and-such because" and then ... I add some speculation to the mix. This only deepens the opinion. It only makes it harder to drop the trade when it goes badly.
Hold onto your opinions lightly, and grasp your money management rules tightly.
